Kangyatse is located at just above Nimaling, east end of the Markha valley. Kangyatse has two main summits. The lower western peak is one of the famous and not technical peak, so doesn’t require special mountaineering skills to climb, but above average endurance and physical fitness.

The Markha valley trek is one of the most popular treks in Ladakh. Markha valley is the part of Hemis national park and it is a very famous valley for wildlife like Snow leopard, Blue sheep, marmot, wolf and fox etc.

For those adventurers who are looking for a first ascent of 6000m peak, Kang Yatse 2 is an ideal peak but requires equal amount of endurance and physical fitness.

Overview

Trek Schedule: 24th August to 4th September 2024
Trek Fees: Rs. 65,000 + GST (at actual)
(Ex- Leh)

Register yourself by paying booking amount Rs. 20,000 (Non-refundable*)

Cancellation Policy:

  1. If cancellation is made one month or more prior to the trek, we will refund 100% of the paid amount
  2. If cancellation is made 15 to 30 days prior to the trek, we will refund 50% of the paid amount
  3. If the cancellation is made within 15 days prior to the trek, there will be no refund.

If the trek gets cancelled due to any any natural calamities like Uttarakhand floods, Nepal Earthquake, Covid-19 pandemic, we will refund the trek fees deducting actual expenses incurred depending on the stage of the trek.

Itinerary

Day 1 :
Arrival at Leh (11,000 ft)

You will receive by one of our members and transfer to a hotel or guest house. The first day will be a rest for the whole day to Acclimatize well for the coming days as the altitude of Leh itself is 3,500 m above sea level.
Stay : (Overnight stay in Hotel /Guesthouse )

Day 2 :
Leh Acclimatization day

Today is also a rest day in Leh to get familiar with the weather and altitude. Today we will explore the culture and nature of the city. We will visit some monasteries nearby Leh town and market for shopping.
Stay: Overnight in hotel/ Guesthouse

Day 3 :
Drive from Leh to Skyu village (11,210 ft /3,366 m)

We will drive towards Markha valley via a confluence of Zanskar and Indus river and will enter the valley along Zanskar river towards Chilling village in opposite direction. We will explore the Kaya and Skyu village the beginning of Markha valley.
Stay: Overnight in a tent || Altitude :11,210 ft /3,366 m

Day 4 :
Trek from Skyu to Markha (12,520 ft /3760m)

The trail from Skyu to Markha village is not so strenuous but it's a pleasant walk through the small villages along the stream. we have to cross stream water a few times depending on the water level. Markha is a beautiful village with around 20 households and it’s the largest village in the valley.
Duration: 6 hrs || Stay: overnight camp || Altitude: 12,520 ft /3760m

Day 5 :
Trek from Markha to Thachungtse (13,815 ft / 4,150m)

Today is also a beautiful walk through the valley along the Streamwater, and from today we will get the view of magnificent Snow clad peak Kang Yatse. On the way, we might spot herds of Blue sheep as well.
Duration: 6-7 hrs || Stay: Overnight camp || Altitude :13,815 ft / 4,150m

Day 6 :
Rest Day at Thachungtse

You will go for a small acclimatization hike near by.
Duration: 2-3 hrs || Stay: Overnight camp || Altitude :13,815 ft / 4,150m

Day 7 :
Trek from Thachungtse to Kangyatse base camp (16,730 ft / 5,100 m)

The view of both Kang Yatse is wonderful from here and the valley itself is beautiful with a variety of flora. And on the way, we will be passing several Mani walls (flat stones with Tibetan inscriptions). And from some point it’s uphill through the loose rocks till the point from where we get the view of base camp.
Duration: 5-6 hrs || Stay: Overnight camp || Altitude: 5,100 m

Day 8 :
Acclimatization day and training (16,730 ft / 5,100 m )

Today will be Acclimatization and rest day and we will do height gain walk till 5200 m. All the accessories and gears will be checked followed by brief training about the snow and ice craft techniques.

Day 9 :
Summit attempt to Kang Yatse 2 and back to Base Camp (20,500 ft / 6,240 m)

Today is our summit day. We will start after midnight to reach the summit also known as Kang Yatse shoulder by daybreak, to get the glorious view of Zanskar range and other ranges. It’s almost all the way gradual except there is some point where we have to rope up. We will be back to camp around pre lunchtime.
Stay: overnight tent || Altitude: 20,500 ft/ 6,240 m || Duration: Long day of about 10hrs

Day 10 :
Buffer Day

This is a contingency day in case of bad weather. You can attempt summit on this day according to the expedition leader's call.

Day 11 :
Trek from Base camp to Chokdo and Drive to Leh

A last day of the trek, we will pack our camp early morning and proceed towards Kongmarula pass (5,260m) through the beautiful pasture land of Nimaling. It a quite steep after some point till the top of the pass and after passing its all the way down steep till Chokdo along the stream. From the chokdo, we will be driving back to Leh city.
Stay: Hotel Leh || Altitude : 11,000ft || Duration: 7 hrs trek and 1 and half hrs drive.

Day 12 :
Tour ends, Airport drop : Adieu

You will be driven to Leh Airport. Have a safe journey and cherish the memories forever!

How Difficult is this climb?

It is a moderate level semi-technical ascent but above 6000 m altitude. That means a fair amount of physical fitness is required. Having a prior experience of high altitude will be of added advantage.

Give me some tips about level of fitness required.

We will share a 2 or 4 months fitness module that you can follow. The best practice would be to climb uphill and downhill. A local hill climb or stair climb should be your primary training regime. Please see the detailed fitness plans in the resources section.

How is the climate and min temperatures during the trek?

Markha valley region is relatively cold and dry. However, July – Aug is the season where you can get relatively warmer conditions compared to the rest of the year. Having said this, the night temperature could certainly be subzero and at day time with the clear sky, it may go up to 10 -15 degree Celsius. Rains are scarce but the cold is the dry cold is the biggest frontier.

How is the food and accommodation during the trek?

Excellent freshly cooked meals and hot drinking water is served during the whole
expedition. A variety of veg/non veg hygienic meals are served.

Do I have to carry my personal technical gear?

Technical equipment such as Climbing shoes, crampons, gaiters, Ice Axe, climbing ropes, ascenders, descenders, helmets, ice screws, rock pitons, carabiners, snow stakes and other technical equipment will be provided (if needed).
