About Lohgad Fort

  • Lohgad Fort is believed to have been constructed during the Satavahana period or possibly even earlier. In 1491, Malik Ahmad, the founder of the Nizamshahi dynasty, captured the fort. After the decline of the Nizamshahi in 1636, the fort came under the control of the Adilshahi regime. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj seized Lohgad in 1657, but as part of the treaty with the Mughals in 1665, he had to relinquish it. However, in a bold move on May 13, 1670, Shivaji Maharaj recaptured the fort by scaling its walls and brought it back into Swarajya. In 1818, like many other forts, Lohgad was annexed into British control. Architectural Highlights: Entrance Gates and Defensive Planning: Lohgad’s four gates are a remarkable example of strategic defensive architecture. The design ensures that an enemy at any one gate would fall within the precise range of attacks from the other three gates and the watchtower openings (jangya). This ingenious arrangement makes Lohgad’s entrance defenses unique among the forts in the Sahyadri range. Vinchu Kata (Scorpion’s Tail): A distinct feature of Lohgad is the Vinchu Kata, a narrow, scorpion-tail-shaped ridge extending from the main fort. This natural landform is connected to the fort and was further fortified for protection. The sides of the ridge were carved steeply in critical areas, and the tip features a double-layered bastion, making the Vinchu Katanearly impenetrable. Fortifications: The fort is surrounded by robust walls with bastions strategically placed for maximum defense. The triple-layered defenses around the Vinchu Kataand the careful carving of steep cliffs exemplify advanced fortification techniques of the era. Lohgad’s architectural design seamlessly integrates natural topography with human ingenuity, making it a masterclass in medieval fort construction. Its unique entrance planning and the Vinchu Kata remain some of the finest examples of defensive architecture in India.
