Kedarkantha, a trekking bugyal and hilltop situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand in the Govind National Park, has become a favorite among seasoned trekkers as well as amateurs. People often confuse Kedarkantha with Kedarnath, the famous Shiv Temple, but Kedarkantha has its own unique charm. The summit of Kedarkantha offers a splendid view that makes every step of Kedarkantha worthwhile.

The journey to Kedarkantha starts from the small village of Sankri at an altitude of 1950 m. Along the way, Kedarkantha takes you through lush pine forests, sparkling streams, and wide meadows. Winter transforms Kedarkantha into a magical white paradise, perfect for photography, camping, and snow activities.

Kedarkantha is classified as a moderate-level adventure, suitable for beginners while still challenging for experienced trekkers. There are two camps before the summit – Juda ka Talab and Kedarkantha Base Camp. The stretch from base camp to the summit of Kedarkantha is considered the most challenging part, especially in snowy conditions, but the view from Kedarkantha is inexpressible.

A typical Kedarkantha journey spans 4–6 days, giving trekkers ample time to acclimatize and soak in the beauty of Kedarkantha. Kedarkantha offers serene camping sites under star-lit skies, making winter nights at Kedarkantha truly magical. Kedarkantha is also rich in biodiversity, with pine, oak, and deodar trees along the route, giving Kedarkantha its unique charm.

Itinerary

  • Day
    01

    Arrive in Dehradun and Drive to Sankri (1,920 m ; 6,300 feet)

    This will be your first day and you will be driven to Sankri, a beautiful establishment and the nearest road head of Kedarkanth Trek. You will travel besides Yamuna and Tans rivers. Picturesque pine trees on the route will certainly catch your attention. Once you reach Sankri, rooms / tents will be allotted and the trek leader will brief you about the trek. Pack your bags according to the requirement and enjoy the evening in the fresh air of Sankri.

    02

    Trek to Shephard Campsite (2,700 m ; 8860 feet)

    A wake up call at 5.30 AM for everyone. You will be served hot and delicious breakfast. Trek will start after the breakfast. Initially, the trail is somewhat gradual till Saur village. Once you cross Saur, actual climb starts till Juda Ka Talab campsite. Shephard is a beautiful campsite amidst the dense forest. A lake in the middle and tents all around makes it even more pristine to spend your evening.

    03

    Trek to Kedarkanth Base Camp (3,430 m ; 11,250 feet)

    Third day, you will be climbing till the base camp of Kedarkanth. The trek route is not a lengthy one but certainly more steeper. On the way, you will witness magnificent views of Rupin Valley (Rupin Pass- a famous inter state trek) and Rhododendron forest on one side. Once you reach the base camp, trek leaders will again brief you about the actual summit attempt and related instructions.

    04

    Summit Kedarkanth and descend to Juda Ka Talab (3800 m ; 12,500 feet)

    The Day, when you will start the summit attempt really early at 04:00 hrs. The entire route goes through snow and takes around 6-8 hours to reach till the summit of Kedarkanth. The wind gusts will definitely feel you much colder than any other point of the trek but that what's you are here for. We would rather say - " ENJOY THE DISCOMFORT ". After spending some time at the summit, start your descend and continue towards Shephard campsite. Enjoy the evening under sky with the fresh memories of the summit.

    05

    Trek to Sankri

    This is last day of the trek and you will start comparatively late than previous days. You have to descend till Sankri via different route. After reaching Sankri, you will stay in same guest house / campsite like Day 1. Enjoy the evening and rest properly.

    Drive back to Dehradun

    You will start your journey early after breakfast. It will take around 10 hrs to reach Dehradun, say at 7.30 - 8 PM. Please plan your next travel accordingly.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

1. If cancellation is made one month or more prior to the trek, we will refund 100% of the paid amount.

2. If cancellation is made 15 to 30 days prior to the trek, we will refund 50% of the paid amount.

3. If the cancellation is made within 15 days prior to the trek, there will be no refund.

4. If the trek gets cancelled due to any any natural calamities like Uttarakhand floods, Nepal Earthquake, Covid-19 pandemic, we will refund the trek fees deducting actual expenses incurred depending on the stage of the trek.

How Difficult is this climb?

Kedarkantha is a perfect trek for beginners with a couple of challenging sections. This is why it’s a trek we recommend to many beginners, families and even those starting trekking late in their lives. Definitely the snow adds challenge to the trek but beautiful and picturesque campsites make it a bucket list trek for everyone.

Give me some fitness tips required for the trek

Trekkers are supposed to be in good physical conditions. You should increase the level of intensity of training over 2-3 months period. Apart from daily fitness, you should carry 4-6 KG load on your back during the practice treks. It will help you simulate the trekking conditions. Kedarkantha has moderate level uphill-downhill walk and on some specific trails, you may even have to climb little steeper and snow will add some amount of difficulty on the slopes.

Climate and Temperature during the trek

The weather in the season ranges from 1-10 degrees Celsius in lower places and 5 to -5 degrees Celsius as you go to higher positions. In the winter season, there is a high chance of snow, and the day remains a little overcast

Accommodation Changes: If the original itinerary cannot be followed, we may need to make alternative accommodation arrangements.

Insurance Premiums: While we recommend travel insurance to cover unforeseen expenses, please note that the cost of insurance is not included in our tour package. Participants must follow up with their insurance company for any disputes. We will assist with any required documentation or information from our organization but cannot guarantee insurance coverage.

Other Uncertain Additional Expenses: Any unforeseen expenses that may arise due to disruptions.

If such restrictions are imposed during your trek, we may need to alter the itinerary or terminate the trek early. In such cases, we may not be able to provide a full refund.
