Offbeat: Korai Ghat – Gavlan Ghat Trek

1 Day

The Korai Ghat – Gavlan Ghat Trek holds historical importance as these ghats were once traditional mountain passes used by traders, soldiers, and local villagers to travel across the rugged Sahyadri ranges. Long before motorable roads were built, such routes formed the backbone of trade and communication, connecting coastal towns with the Deccan plateau.

Korai Ghat and Gavlan Ghat served as crucial links for transporting goods like salt, grains, spices, and forest produce between Konkan and inland Maharashtra. The natural passes were also strategically important, as they allowed armies and messengers to move quickly during the era of the Maratha Empire and earlier dynasties. The presence of ancient stone-cut steps and pathways along certain stretches is a reminder of their use as established trade routes rather than just wilderness trails.

Apart from trade, these ghats were lifelines for local communities. Villagers depended on them for daily travel, accessing markets, and cultural exchanges across regions. Oral traditions still exist among locals about how these routes played a role in sustaining livelihoods before modern transport.
