The Hampta Pass and Chandrataal Lake trek blends forests, meadows, and rugged Himalayan terrain into one beautiful journey. The trail moves from walnut and spruce forests into open alpine fields, with early views of Deo Tibba and Indrasan guiding you upward. As you approach the pass, the scenery becomes sharper and more dramatic.
At 4,270 meters, Hampta Pass opens up to a breathtaking panorama Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and the Nuglsar Ridge standing tall across the horizon. The descent drops suddenly into the stark Chandra valley and eventually leads to the tranquil Chandrataal Lake. Surrounded by snow covered peaks and summer alpine flowers, the lake offers striking views of the CB range and the Samundra Tapu glacier.
Chandrataal feels less like a stop on a trek and more like a quiet, otherworldly moment in the mountains.

The Hampta Pass and Chandrataal Lake trek is a stunning crossover from the lush greenery of Kullu to the stark, high-altitude desert of Lahaul. Starting from Jobra, trekkers move through dense forests and gentle meadows before settling in for the night at Chikka, surrounded by streams and open grasslands. The gradual climb makes it a perfect warm-up for the tougher days ahead.
From Chikka, the trail heads toward Balu ka Ghera, a broad sandy valley guarded by towering peaks like Deo Tibba and Indrasan. The next day leads to the main highlight crossing Hampta Pass at 4,270 meters and then descending to Shea Goru, a cold, windswept campsite in the Chandra valley. This stretch is where the trek earns its moderate to difficult tag, demanding steady fitness, long walking hours, and comfort with steep ascents and descents.
The final leg takes trekkers from Shea Goru to Chhatru, where the terrain shifts dramatically to Lahaul’s rugged landscape. A drive from here leads to the surreal Chandrataal Lake, a high altitude gem known for its calm blue waters and striking views of the CB range. The entire journey beautifully balances challenge and reward ideal for trekkers who enjoy varied terrain and are prepared for a bit of effort along the way.
