Nisargnaad’s Madhe-Upande Ghat Trek

1 Day

The Madhe-Upande Ghat trek is a beautiful and moderately challenging hiking route nestled in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra. This trail carries both natural beauty and historical significance, making it a favorite among avid trekkers and history enthusiasts. The trek begins at Madhe Ghat, located around 65 km from Pune near the village of Kelad, and leads through dense forests, ancient pathways, and rolling hills before descending into Upande Ghat, near the village of Upande. The route is believed to have been used during the Maratha era, notably for transporting the body of Tanaji Malusare (a Maratha warrior who fought in the Battle of Sinhagad) back to his native village, adding a profound historical dimension to the journey.

The landscape is especially breathtaking during and just after the monsoon months, when the hills are lush green, small streams crisscross the path, and the Madhe Ghat waterfall is in full flow. The trek passes through Laxmi Khind, a significant mountain pass that once connected strategic forts like Torna, Rajgad, and Raigad. The route is enveloped in thick forest cover with frequent valley views, and on clear days, trekkers can catch distant glimpses of the Sahyadri forts. It’s a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and heritage. The trail itself stretches around 10 to 12 kilometers and typically takes 5 to 7 hours to complete, depending on the route taken and pace. It’s categorized as a moderate trek.
