Mahabaleshwar – Pratapgad Trek

Trek Date: Sunday, 05 January 2025
Trek Fee: Rs. 1,600 /- (Inc. GST)

Pratapgad, a significant fort in the Maratha kingdom (Swarajya), is located west of Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra’s Satara district. Situated on the route connecting Poladpur (on the Mumbai-Goa Highway) to Pargaon, specifically along the Parghat and Ambenali Ghat sections, the fort strategically controlled these crucial mountain passes. The Koyna River flows at its base, and the surrounding area is covered by the dense Jawali forest.

Originally known as the Bhorpya hill, the fort was completely rebuilt by Shivaji Maharaj and renamed Pratapgad. The construction was overseen by his Prime Minister, Moropant Trimbak Pingle (who held the title of “Peshwe” at the time).

Pratapgad is historically important due to the Bhavani Mata temple built by Shivaji Maharaj and, most notably, the assassination of Afzal Khan.
