Kedarkantha, a trekking bugyal and hill top situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand in the Govind National Park, it has turned out to be an attraction for seasoned trekkers as well as for amateurs. People often get confused between Kedarkantha and Kedarnath (which is a famous Shiv Temple). Kedarkantha trek offers a splendid view from the summit.
Trek starts from a small village Sankri situated at an altitude of 1950 m. There are two camps before the summit – Juda ka talab and Kedarkantha Base Camp. The stretch from base camp to the summit is what that takes a toll and is considered to be a challenging one through snowy conditions. The view from the summit is inexpressible, you need to get there and experience it for yourself!

Itinerary
This will be your first day and you will be driven to Sankri, a beautiful establishment and the nearest road head of Kedarkanth Trek. You will travel besides Yamuna and Tans rivers. Picturesque pine trees on the route will certainly catch your attention. Once you reach Sankri, rooms / tents will be allotted and the trek leader will brief you about the trek. Pack your bags according to the requirement and enjoy the evening in the fresh air of Sankri.
A wake up call at 5.30 AM for everyone. You will be served hot and delicious breakfast. Trek will start after the breakfast. Initially, the trail is somewhat gradual till Saur village. Once you cross Saur, actual climb starts till Juda Ka Talab campsite. Shephard is a beautiful campsite amidst the dense forest. A lake in the middle and tents all around makes it even more pristine to spend your evening.
Third day, you will be climbing till the base camp of Kedarkanth. The trek route is not a lengthy one but certainly more steeper. On the way, you will witness magnificent views of Rupin Valley (Rupin Pass- a famous inter state trek) and Rhododendron forest on one side. Once you reach the base camp, trek leaders will again brief you about the actual summit attempt and related instructions.
The Day, when you will start the summit attempt really early at 04:00 hrs. The entire route goes through snow and takes around 6-8 hours to reach till the summit of Kedarkanth. The wind gusts will definitely feel you much colder than any other point of the trek but that what’s you are here for. We would rather say – ” ENJOY THE DISCOMFORT “. After spending some time at the summit, start your descend and continue towards Shephard campsite. Enjoy the evening under sky with the fresh memories of the summit.
This is last day of the trek and you will start comparatively late than previous days. You have to descend till Sankri via different route. After reaching Sankri, you will stay in same guest house / campsite like Day 1. Enjoy the evening and rest properly.
You will start your journey early after breakfast. It will take around 10 hrs to reach Dehradun, say at 7.30 – 8 PM. Please plan your next travel accordingly.

Kedarkantha is a perfect trek for beginners with a couple of challenging sections. This is why it’s a trek we recommend to many beginners, families and even those starting trekking late in their lives. Definitely the snow adds challenge to the trek but beautiful and picturesque campsites make it a bucket list trek for everyone.
Trekkers are supposed to be in good physical conditions. You should increase the level of intensity of training over 2-3 months period. Apart from daily fitness, you should carry 4-6 KG load on your back during the practice treks. It will help you simulate the trekking conditions. Kedarkantha has moderate level uphill-downhill walk and on some specific trails, you may even have to climb little steeper and snow will add some amount of difficulty on the slopes.
The weather in the season ranges from 1-10 degrees Celsius in lower places and 5 to -5 degrees Celsius as you go to higher positions. In the winter season, there is a high chance of snow, and the day remains a little overcast
