Hampta Pass & Chandrataal Lake Trek

7 Days

The Hampta Pass and Chandrataal Lake trek blends forests, meadows, and rugged Himalayan terrain into one beautiful journey. The trail moves from walnut and spruce forests into open alpine fields, with early views of Deo Tibba and Indrasan guiding you upward. As you approach the pass, the scenery becomes sharper and more dramatic.

At 4,270 meters, Hampta Pass opens up to a breathtaking panorama Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and the Nuglsar Ridge standing tall across the horizon. The descent drops suddenly into the stark Chandra valley and eventually leads to the tranquil Chandrataal Lake. Surrounded by snow covered peaks and summer alpine flowers, the lake offers striking views of the CB range and the Samundra Tapu glacier.

Chandrataal feels less like a stop on a trek and more like a quiet, otherworldly moment in the mountains.

Why should you do the Hampta Pass & Chandrataal Lake trek with GAF?

Because it’s one of the few Himalayan trails that shows you two completely different worlds in a single journey lush forests and rolling meadows on one side, and the stark, desert like beauty of Lahaul on the other. The climb to Hampta Pass, the descent into the Chandra valley, and the visit to Chandrataal Lake make it a perfect mix of challenge, scenery, and pure mountain magic.

Giripremi Adventure Foundation brings decades of mountaineering experience, safety-first planning, and a team that has operated in some of the toughest Himalayan terrains. With certified leaders, reliable logistics, and a genuine passion for the outdoors, GAF ensures your Hampta Pass and Chandratal Lake Trek journey is not just well managed but deeply memorable and safe.

Overview

Trek Schedule : 25th June to 30th June 2026
Trek Cost : INR 20,500/- + 5% GST (Ex-Naggar)

The Hampta Pass and Chandrataal Lake trek is a stunning crossover from the lush greenery of Kullu to the stark, high-altitude desert of Lahaul. Starting from Jobra, trekkers move through dense forests and gentle meadows before settling in for the night at Chikka, surrounded by streams and open grasslands. The gradual climb makes it a perfect warm-up for the tougher days ahead.

From Chikka, the trail heads toward Balu ka Ghera, a broad sandy valley guarded by towering peaks like Deo Tibba and Indrasan. The next day leads to the main highlight crossing Hampta Pass at 4,270 meters and then descending to Shea Goru, a cold, windswept campsite in the Chandra valley. This stretch is where the trek earns its moderate to difficult tag, demanding steady fitness, long walking hours, and comfort with steep ascents and descents.

The final leg takes trekkers from Shea Goru to Chhatru, where the terrain shifts dramatically to Lahaul’s rugged landscape. A drive from here leads to the surreal Chandrataal Lake, a high altitude gem known for its calm blue waters and striking views of the CB range. The entire journey beautifully balances challenge and reward ideal for trekkers who enjoy varied terrain and are prepared for a bit of effort along the way.

The impressive grandeur of immediate surroundings, the nearness of the Tokru-Shakru peaks, the wonderful coloring of the rocks and mountainside, all make this one of the best campsites on the route. It also has the river, Alain Nullah, which has its snout in the Hamta Pass. The trail now begins to ascend towards Hamta Pass and reaches Bhalu Ka Ghera, which in the local dialect means Bears den. Himalayan Brown Bear sightings can happen here, if one is exceptionally lucky.

Best time to Trek!

June: The Challenge of Snow
June is the peak of the "snow season" at Hampta Pass. Because the valley leading to the pass is narrow and shielded from direct sunlight, the snowpack remains deep and firm well into the summer.
Temperature: Day: 15°C to 20°C | Night: 1°C to 5°C.
Terrain: Expect significant snow cover from Balu Ka Ghera all the way over the pass and down into the Lahaul side.
Preparation: 3 warm layers are essential. Trekkers should be prepared for steady snow trekking and potential "post-holing" in softer sections.
Key Highlight: The sheer volume of snow provides a true Himalayan adventure feel, even in the height of summer.

July & August: The Bloom & Monsoon
As July begins, the landscape undergoes a radical transformation. While the snow begins to recede to the highest ridges, the Kullu side of the pass bursts into a vibrant ecosystem of flora.
Temperature: Day: 15°C to 20°C | Night: 1°C to 5°C.
Flora: This is the season of the "Himalayan Valley of Flowers" effect. Look for long pink Bistorts, bright Marigolds, and the elusive Blue Poppies.
Weather: Expect monsoon showers. The skies are often cloudy, but the greenery is at its peak.
Preparation: 3 warm layers + high-quality waterproof gear (ponchos/rain jackets).

Giripremi Note: This is often considered the most beautiful time for the trek due to the contrast between the wildflower beds on the Kullu side and the rugged rain-shadow landscape of Shea Goru.

The Giripremi Fitness Philosophy
Trekking is an endurance sport that demands peak performance from your lungs, core, and lower body (calves, glutes, quads, and hamstrings). To conquer the steep ascent to Hampta Pass and the technical descent into Lahaul, you must focus on two pillars:
Cardiovascular Endurance: To maintain oxygen flow at high altitudes.
Muscle Strength: To carry your backpack and stabilize your joints on uneven terrain.
The Gold Standard: Running
We recommend running/jogging as the primary training method. It perfectly mimics the repetitive foot movement and muscle engagement required for trekking while building the lung capacity needed for the thin air of the pass (4,270 m).
Fitness Target: To qualify for the Hampta Pass Trek, you must be able to run 5 km in under 35 minutes. This is the benchmark for a safe and comfortable experience.

6-Week Trek-Fit Training Plan
If you are starting from a sedentary lifestyle, follow this progressive schedule to build your stamina systematically.
Cardiovascular Schedule (The 5km Goal)
Weekly Routine
Week 1 & 2
Walk/Jog for 3 km at a comfortable pace. Aim for 3-4 sessions a week.
Week 3 & 4
Increase distance to 4 km. Introduce 15 minutes of brisk walking in between jogs.
Week 5 & 6
Push for the 5 km mark. Focus on finishing within the 35-minute target.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the trek fee?

The fee typically covers all on-trek costs: tented accommodation (twin/triple sharing), all meals (nutritious 3 course veg meals and hot drinks), qualified mountaineering instructors, forest permits, trekking equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mats), and the drive from Chatru to Chandrataal and back to Manali.

Can I offload my backpack?

Yes, backpack offloading is available for an additional fee. We recommend booking this at least 10 days in advance. However, at Giripremi, we encourage trekkers to carry their own packs to experience the true spirit of trekking.

How difficult is the Hampta Pass trek?

The trek is graded as Moderate. While it is accessible for beginners, the "crossover" nature of the trek means you will face steep ascents, river crossings, and potentially deep snow (in June) or rainy sections (in July/August).

Is there an age limit?

We recommend this trek for individuals aged 15 to 45 years. Participants outside this bracket can join subject to a physical fitness evaluation by our instructors.

When is the best time to do this trek?

June: Best for snow lovers. Expect deep snow on the pass.

July–August: Best for flora. The Kullu side becomes a "Valley of Flowers." Be prepared for rain.

How cold does it get?

Daytime temperatures range between 12°C and 20°C. Night temperatures at higher camps (Balu Ka Ghera and Shea Goru) can drop to 0°C or even -5°C.
