Geminid meteor shower special camping at GGIM’s campsite Mulshi

2 Days

Camping at GGIM's new campsite at Valane, Mulshi (Tamhini)

Guardian Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering has developed a beautiful campsite near Valane, Mulshi to promote on conduct the Mountaineering and Nature related activities. During this activity one can experience one of the beautiful sunset at the back waters of Mulshi dam; Nature walk in the buffer zone of Tamhini reserve forest; Planetary telescope observations activity; Metior shower observation under the open clear sky; Fun games/Team games, etc.

The Geminid meteor shower is an annual event that peaks in mid-December, known for its bright, fast, and often yellow meteors. It originates from the debris of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon and can produce up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal, dark-sky conditions. To view it, find a location away from city lights, preferably after midnight, lie back, and look up at the sky.

Unlike most other meteor showers, the Geminids are caused by dust and debris from an asteroid, 3200 Phaethon, rather than a comet. The shower is active from around late November to mid-December, with the peak typically occurring between December 13th and 14th. It is best to observe after midnight when the radiant point in the Gemini constellation is highest in the sky. The ideal viewing conditions include a dark, clear sky, free from light pollution. A bright moon can significantly reduce the number of visible meteors, though the Geminids' abundance of bright meteors helps them remain visible even with some moonlight.
