A group of experts studied over 390 forts spread across the Sahyadri ranges, Konkan coast, Deccan plateau, and the south-eastern coast. Then the experts analysed each fort in the context of Maratha history, identifying their roles across different periods. The forts were then grouped into clusters based on their location and patterns of military movement, helping map the vast defense network established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. From this study, 60 forts were shortlisted as primary and secondary forts. A detailed comparison of 29 primary forts was carried out, based on strategic importance, unique Maratha defense features, and military history. Finally, 12 forts were selected as the best representatives of the overall Maratha defense network by the experts.
The team from Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh including volunteers from Giripremi played a crucial, hands-on role in the successful nomination of the “Maratha Military Landscapes of India” to UNESCO’s tentative list.
On-Ground Logistical Support: The academic and government teams from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums (Govt. of Maharashtra) required extensive on-ground support. Mountaineers, with its deep knowledge of the Sahyadri terrain, provided this.
Documentation & Survey Assistance: They facilitated access to remote parts of the forts, assisted in photographic and videographic documentation, and helped survey the intricate features—from hidden pathways to complex water cisterns—which were vital for the nomination dossier.
Facilitating Expert Visits: Led by veteran mountaineer Umesh Zirpe, AMGM’s team organized and led visits for the panel of experts, ensuring they could safely and efficiently study the forts’ architecture, layout, and strategic positioning. They were the bridge between the academic experts and the raw, challenging terrain of the forts.
